Description
Appellant Baldridge was convicted of first-degree murder in the death of Pearl Newby, an elderly invalid residing with appellant
at the time of her death. She was sentenced to life in prison without parole. Beverly Baldridge appeals her conviction, and
also appeals the denial of her 29.15 motion. Pearl Newby was 84 years old at the time of her death. She had been suffering from heart disease many years, and also suffered
from other medical conditions, including kidney deficiency. Because of her condition of chronic congestive heart disease,
she had been taking digoxin, a form of digitalis, at least ten years. Digoxin is a medication which increases the ability
of the heart to contract, causing the heart to be able to pump more effectively. Digoxin is ordinarily taken daily for maximum
therapeutic effect. The dosage must be monitored, due to the fact that if a patient is not excreting sufficient bodily fluids,
the digitalis can build up to toxic levels, which may cause cardiac arrest.
